THE HISTORIC COMMEMORATION OF THE MILLE MIGLIA

TODAY
The foundation of Argenta dates back to Roman times, but the most significant traces of its history – the historical, urban and architectural testimonies of the territory – have been swept away during the course of the centuries by inundations of water, floods, earthquakes and wars. The Second World War, in particular, literally destroyed all trace of its past in architectural and urban terms, so the city of today results from an imposing and intense work of reconstruction that involved the municipal administration and all civil society, starting from the end of the war to today.

The municipal territory of Argenta, which was constituted of a capital city and 13 hamlets and 22,509 inhabitants as of 31 December 2008, extends for about 311 square kilometres and mainly occupies part of the south east province of Ferrara, bordering with the provinces of Bologna and Ravenna. The territory is characteristically flat, and is at an altitude of +9.50 metres above sea level to -2 (the capital town is at +4).
