THE HISTORIC COMMEMORATION OF THE MILLE MIGLIA

TODAY
From the lake to the hills.
The city in which St. Luigi Gonzaga and the idea of the Red Cross were born is the beating heart of Upper Mantua, a territory of great fascination, where nature and history, past and modern, entwine in vital harmony.
A handful of kilometers south of Lake Garda, not far from the beach areas of Sirmione and Desenzano, and here, unpredictably, is the scenery of the Morainic Mantuan Hills...
Infinite shades of green and a transparent quietness to enable oneself to be enwrapped in the breath of nature following traces of memory.
Four hundred thousand years ago, the great alpine glaciers began to melt due to an increase in temperature, and masses of debris was carried down by the water and accumulated in the valley. That is how Lake Garda and the Morainic Hills were born, stratas of stone, rock and sand, where resurgences and drinking fountains appeared.
That explains the variety of the countryside which, due to a discreet presence of man, holds pleasant surprises, especially to those who renounce the car to walk, cycle and ride horses along the numerous tracks that can be entered in the area of Castiglione delle Stiviere. From the half-light of the woods, populated by wildlife and singing birds, the horizon broadens into a rolling countryside of vineyards which, in the spring and summer, are peppered with primroses, irises, violets, red lilies and a great variety of wild orchids, while the rows of cypresses testify to the mildness of the climate and the presence of ancient villages, churches and castles.
